College of Policing to confirm online exam dates by mid-June

The College of Policing has moved to end uncertainty for officers taking promotion exams in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis.

As revealed earlier this week, officer promotion exams for England and Wales will be online assessments which will take place in September due to concerns that lockdown measures will still need to be in place.

A comprehensive overhaul and rapid investment in technology means future sergeants and inspectors will be able to use the online platform for exams, in addition to those taking the National Investigators’ Exam (NIE).

All exams held in 2020 will be examined against the existing syllabus for 2020, which can be found in the relevant candidate handbook.

The College also made clear it is working with forces and the Police Federation to ensure standards are not compromised.

The syllabus which officers will be examined on also remains unchanged and they will be given a minimum of three months’ notice before an exam.

A date for the National Police Promotion Framework (NPPF) Sergeants’ and Inspectors’ Exams that are due to take place this autumn will be confirmed within the next two weeks.

The NIE scheduled for 2020 will be held, as planned, on Tuesday, 8 September 2020 and Tuesday, 24 November 2020.

The Direct Entry Superintendents’ Examination will be held, as planned, on Tuesday, 17 November 2020.

Chief Constable Mike Cunningham, College of Policing chief executive, said: “We committed to finding alternative ways for responding to the pandemic and this new system means policing can continue to have the right supervisors in place to protect the public and manage the increase in officers coming into the service.”
