Life after 'the job'

Published: Wednesday 3 March 2010

Are you looking to work after you leave the service? If you are, then it's good to know there is great demand for your policing skills.

The commercial, public and policing sectors all require trained police personnel in both generalist ‘policing’ roles and more specialist positions.

The commercial sector offers many opportunities, from the traditional insurance investigative roles to more compliance type positions within financial service organisations. Increased opportunities Legislation such as the Proceeds of Crime Act and the strengthening of Anti Money Laundering Regulations has created the need for new commercial financial crime compliance business areas, who welcome applications from officers with specialist knowledge.

The public sector has seen a whole raft of new legislation such as the Environment Act, Clean Neighbourhood Act and the Crime and Disorder Act, all compelling local authorities to investigate incidents using investigation best practice techniques and to enforce new by laws and laws. Warden schemes and neighbourhood protection officers also create a continual need for police experienced trainers. The Offender Management work community with its emphasis on restorative justice, tracking and surveillance also has a healthy demand for policing skills.

Contract for the police

The police sector has a huge demand for highly experienced contractors. These contractors either work at the ‘coal face’ or take on more specialist roles such as training or project management. Most police authorities also see the benefit of bringing back retired officers on a permanent basis, either staying within sworn officer type duties – 30 year plus schemes – or as highly skilled police staff.

This issue of contracting work vs permanent work is an important consideration for the retired officer. Many retired officers opt to become full time contractors, picking up assignments for 2 to 3 month or 4 to 6 months at a time. There is also the option to work part time, but here opportunities tend to be less frequent. If the contracting route is for you, you have the additional choice of what terms you would like to be employed by. Working as a contractor allows the individual to opt out of traditional PAYE schemes and elect to utilise umbrella company pay schemes with the advantages of having most expenses set against tax paid.

There is also the option to create your own limited company and invoice employers for your service, although there are legal pitfalls with this choice. Police Skills is dedicated to finding retired officers future work. Be you Police Constable or Chief Constable, Police Skills has the job for you! The company offers pre-vetting for a number of Police Forces as well as competitive rates of pay and payroll options.
