The UK police service and criminal justice sector offers some of the most challenging and rewarding careers in human resource management and support. The sector employs over 300,000 people distinctly split between sworn (police officer, customs officer, prison officer) and non sworn personnel.
The sector is undergoing a civilianisation' process, many roles which once carried out by sworn officer will now be carried out by non-sworn staff. Many of its personnel put themselves in positions when dealing with the public or offenders which put them under great strain. The sector offers the HR professional unique challenges and opportunities and probably most refreshing of all, an environment in which the HR function is truly central.
