The standard of Police Oracle’s journalism has been recognised by the media industry.

Deputy Editor Ian Weinfass won the Public Sector and Charities category at the inaugural British Journalism Awards for Specialist Media last night.

The new awards recognise “great journalism being carried out on specialist and [business-to-business] titles – and by specialist journalists working in the mainstream media”, according to organisers Press Gazette.

Ian has reported for Police Oracle since June 2014, and currently  specialises in areas including detective work, terrorism and special constabulary matters.

He was also shortlisted in the legal category and was up against reporters from publications including The Guardian and Health Service Journal.

The recognition is in particular for three articles - an analysis of the use of PFI in policing, revealing what a standards investigation into a chief constable found and a look at the extent of inconsistencies in the misconduct system.

"To be shortlisted in two categories is an achievement in itself, but to win the Public Sector award - a fiercely competitive category - is incredible.

The awards ceremony was held at Stationers' Hall in London last night.
