Essex PFCC Roger Hirst has reappointed CC BJ Harrington, saying that he has made a “significant difference for the people of Essex”.

CC Harrington had taken up the post in October 2018 on a five year contract that is due to expire in October 2023. A three year extension will now take him through to 2026.

The Chief has had a career of over 30 years working in the Met as well as Essex. He was awarded the Queen’s Policing Medal in this year’s New Year’s Honours list.

PFCC Hirst said that under CC Harrington’s leadership, the force has reduced burglary, theft and anti-social behaviour.

“The Chief Constable has led the force as it has faced and overcome a number of major challenges, including the impact of COVID-19 and the tragic death of 39 people in a container in Grays,” he added.

“[He] has be able to provide a stronger, more visible policing presence in communities. He has introduced new teams to tackle the priorities within the Police and Crime Plan, including Town Centre Teams, the Business Crime Team, Rural Crime Team and Domestic Abuse Problem Solving Teams.”
