Superintendents get CPD training as College ups online offer

Training and development for senior officers is being upgraded to improve wellbeing and operational advice.

The College of Policing and the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) have launched a series of online learning events to improve career development opportunities.

The free webinars cover a range of issues including diversity and inclusion, lessons from Operation Talla plus wellbeing and resilience.

Access is being provided through the PSA and College of Policing websites.

The new courses follow on from the online superintendents’ toolkit developed jointly last year.

Driving the online learning offer is PSA President Paul Griffiths, who is also a member of the College of Policing board. He has sought to widen the development offering available for senior leaders.

“Superintendents are afforded the highest level of operational responsibility in forces and deal with serious threat, harm and risk every day, as well as being responsible for vast commands whilst leading strategic and corporate projects,” he said.

“It’s crucial therefore that they are given the chance to hone and develop their experience and expertise and I’m confident that this offering by the College will support this.”

A critical issue for officers has been dealing with BAME community stop and searches which have then been shared on social media.

During the one-and-a-half hour webinar on learning from major incidents, guidance on responding to those incidents will be shared. Officers will be taught how to recognise, understand and engage with the need for personal and organisational change as well as responding to being in the public eye.

With many people beginning lockdown learning, the College of Policing and PSA are using the opportunity to roll out more online courses.

But those planning on joining the events will need to plan ahead as pre-webinar preparation and detailed agendas are being sent out two weeks in advance.

Mr Griffiths said: “I’m delighted that the College has put so much time and energy into producing this programme of development opportunities for our members. I hope that our members make the most of these opportunities and enjoy the sessions which cover such important subject areas.”
