Trading Standards Investigator
Location: Birmingham (Hybrid Working)
Pay Rate: £23.69 per hour (PAYE)
Contract: Temporary – 6 Months

- 1 x Full-Time Position
- 1 x Part-Time Position (3 days per week – flexible working days)

We are recruiting for two experienced professionals to join a busy Trading Standards team on an initial six-month contract. With flexible hybrid working arrangements and both full-time and part-time opportunities available, this is an excellent opportunity to work on a varied caseload, protecting consumers and supporting fair trading practices.
The Role
Working as part of an established team, you will undertake investigations into breaches of Trading Standards legislation and other regulatory offences. Managing cases from initial enquiry through to enforcement action where appropriate, you will work in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and investigative procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct investigations into alleged breaches of Trading Standards legislation and related offences.
- Gather, assess and record evidence in accordance with relevant legislation and investigative procedures.
- Plan and manage investigations, including interviewing witnesses, complainants and, where appropriate, suspects.
- Prepare witness statements, case files and reports to support legal proceedings.
- Attend court or tribunals to provide evidence where required.
- Undertake intelligence gathering and contribute to the development of investigations.
- Liaise with consumers, businesses, partner agencies and other stakeholders throughout investigations.
- Provide advice and guidance to businesses and members of the public on Trading Standards legislation and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain accurate case records, performance information and documentation using relevant IT systems.
- Ensure evidence and documentation are handled securely and in accordance with legal requirements.
- Support enforcement activity and collaborate with colleagues on more complex investigations where required.
- Keep up to date with relevant legislation, investigative practices and professional standards.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Essential Experience
- Previous experience working within a Trading Standards or regulatory enforcement environment.
- Experience conducting criminal or regulatory investigations from initial enquiry through to conclusion.
- Experience gathering, assessing and presenting evidence.
- Experience interviewing witnesses, complainants and, where appropriate, suspects.
- Experience preparing detailed reports, witness statements and case files.
- Experience attending court and giving evidence.
- Experience working with members of the public, businesses and partner organisations.
- Ability to manage a varied caseload and work to deadlines.
Knowledge
- Good understanding of Trading Standards legislation and investigative practices.
- Knowledge of legislation and procedures relevant to criminal investigations, evidence gathering and case preparation.
- Understanding of enforcement principles and regulatory compliance.
- Awareness of data protection, safeguarding and health and safety responsibilities.
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong investigative and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to assess information, solve problems and make sound decisions.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Confident using Microsoft Office and electronic case management systems.
