Key Responsibilities

• Provide an effective Neighbourhood Policing Service delivered through the Sector Policing Model.
• Provide a visible and approachable policing presence in the Belfast Harbour community, building trust and confidence through daily engagement.
• Work closely with local businesses, tenants, residents and partner agencies to identify and solve problems that matter most to the community.
• Support the implementation of problem solving and evidence-based policing initiatives by championing and applying relevant methodologies and approaches to your area of work.
• Provide appropriate initial frontline response to a wide range of incidents that may include complex and confrontational situations, assessing immediate risk, threat and harm to determine a proportionate response in line with the law, policy and guidance.
• Prevent Crime and anti-social behaviour by providing reassurance, problem solving and pro-active policing within the Belfast Harbour community.
• Conduct proactive operations to support compliance with the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) regulations.
• Take a leading role in establishing effective localised partnerships within your sector to problem solve, engage with, reassure and support organisations, groups and individuals across communities.
• Effectively engage with victims, witnesses, suspects and vulnerable people, in accordance with equality, diversity and human rights considerations, to provide initial support, sign post relevant services, establish relationships and gather information that prevents, detects and reduces crime.
• Maintain awareness of potential and actual risks to individuals, taking appropriate action to protect and support those in need of public protection to pre-empt or effectively address safety / vulnerability issues.
• Conduct effective and efficient investigations as requested in line with standards of investigation to inform the development of high-quality case files and initiation of criminal justice proceedings.
• Gather information, intelligence, and evidence, from a variety of sources, in line with legislation, policies and guidance to support investigations, law enforcement, port security and criminal justice proceedings.
• Interview victims, witnesses and suspects in relation to crime and Road Traffic investigations, to gather information and evidence supporting law enforcement objectives.
• Use police powers fairly and proportionately and provide evidence to justify and professionally account for actions and ensure adherence to legal frameworks, policies and guidance.
• Represent Belfast Harbour Police and Belfast Harbour positively, upholding the highest standards of behaviour and professionalism.
Work as part of a team, supporting colleagues and sharing local knowledge.

Person Specification

Criteria

Qualifications
• A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics. The onus rests with individual candidates to provide evidence of equivalent qualifications meeting the required level.
• Must have completed three years’ service to include the 2-year probationary period and the Policing Diploma or your forces equivalent qualification at the point of application.

Experience
• You must be a current serving police officer with a UK Territorial Police Service or have served within the last eighteen months.
Other Criteria
• You must hold a full current Category B driving licence for a manual car. Full details of any penalty points, including the reason they were given, must be provided.
• Successful applicants will have to pass a medical screening, vetting and a fitness test and be available to attend a 2-week Belfast Harbour Police induction course.
• Belfast Harbour Police is an armed Police Service and you shall be required to carry a firearm whilst on duty. Officers who are not already qualified shall have to attend and pass the PSNI Firearms course.
• You must not be under any Misconduct or Discipline investigation at time of application as well as a clean disciplinary record.
• Applicants are required to have an appropriate level of computer literacy in order to effectively perform the role of Belfast Harbour Constable. Candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in IT skills at different stages of the recruitment process (e.g. completing an online application form and successful completion of a number of online exercises).
