Merseyside’s deputy chief has been selected for the top job at North Wales Police.

Gulf War veteran Carl Foulkes is PCC Arfon Jones’s preferred candidate for the post.

A statement from the PCC says the appointment followed “a rigorous two-day interview process”. Police Oracle has asked how many other candidates were in the running. (Update 9am August 6:) A spokesman said there were two candidates for the post.

Mr Foulkes, 47, is originally from Caergwrle, near Wrexham, and began his career with British Transport Police in 1993 after a career in the Royal Navy. He has also served with West Midlands Police.

He said: “I am proud and privileged to have been chosen as the preferred candidate to serve the people of North Wales.

“I look forward to meeting the police and crime panel at my confirmation hearing and subject to their approval of my appointment, I very much look forward to leading such a dedicated and hard-working force.”

Mr Jones said: "I am delighted to name Carl Foulkes as my preferred candidate for North Wales’ new chief constable.

“His experience, enthusiasm and commitment was clear from the interview process and I am pleased to be able to put his name forward to the police and crime panel.”

If his appointment is rubber-stamped by the panel he will take over from Chief Constable Mark Polin, who has just stepped down after nine years at the helm.

Deputy Chief Constable Gareth Pritchard will serve as Temporary Chief Constable in the meantime.
