Highest ranking PSNI female officer to join Met as DAC

The new Deputy Assistant Commissioner to replace Lucy D’Orsi is an officer who has served in the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) for the whole of her career.

Barbara Gray is currently assistant chief constable a position she has held since February 2017 having joined the police in 1989.

ACC Gray is responsible for Crime Operations Department and is the highest ranking female officer in Northern Ireland.

Having qualified from the national strategic command course in 2016 she was appointed as temporary Assistant Chief Constable, Operational Support Department in February 2017.

She has led on various areas of policy development including Policing with the Community, Programme for Government and positive action.

Commenting on the appointment, Deputy Commissioner Sir Steve House said: “I am really pleased that Barbara will be joining the Met. She shone in what was a tough selection process with strong competition. She is a highly successful and very experienced Assistant Chief Constable, coming from a complex policing environment. I know Barbara will make a great addition to the Met’s leadership team and I look forward to her starting with us soon.”

Lucy D’Orsi is to become Chief Constable of British Transport Police and further  announcements will follow about the DAC role that ACC Gray will take on and her start date.
