Avon and Somerset Police

Detective Inspector Transferees

Avon and Somerset Police is one of the largest, most diverse forces in the country. We are looking for the highest quality accredited Detective Inspectors to join our team so, if you are looking for a new challenge then we could be the place for you.

What We Offer

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has gained a reputation as a pioneering and innovative force which has led the way on a number of initiatives and gained recognition for our ongoing commitment to support, develop and empower our staff to deliver the best possible service to the public.

We have the potential to offer you a better quality of life coupled with exciting and challenging policing.

Avon and Somerset is a large Constabulary and, as such, can offer a variety of career routes together with potential future opportunities for promotion to senior roles to support our wider workforce planning.

Bristol is the eighth largest city in the UK and is lively and is a rapidly expanding city. Somerset is a beautiful county and includes the historic cities of Bath and Wells, coastal areas with high volumes of seasonal tourists and remote rural communities such as Exmoor.

South Gloucestershire and North Somerset have rapidly expanding areas of new housing and commercial development attracting businesses and young families – all of which combines to provide different and challenging policing.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary are proud to support a representative workforce.  We are neurodiversity and inclusive organisation that welcomes applications from everyone - read more here.

Should you require any further information regarding such opportunities within the Constabulary, please email Supt Marie Wright

About you

We are looking for the highest quality officers to join our ranks.  You must be able to commit to and deliver our force values and priorities in everything you do:

What you need to know:

Below are some extra details that help explain the process of transferring to work in our force.

We will begin to process your application immediately on receipt. Applicants who are successfully shortlisted will be invited for an interview at the Avon and Somerset Police Headquarters, normally within two weeks. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the interview within a week.. We would expect, subject to references and clearance checks that applicants will take up their appointments within two months.

Current Force policy requires officers to live in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary borders and ordinarily within a 20 mile radius of their station of posting. However, we would strongly recommend that you do not enter into any lease or purchase of property until a posting is confirmed.

Postings are decided on the basis of our Force need for personnel at particular locations. Individual preferences will be noted and attempts made to accommodate, depending on the Force's need at the time.

You will ordinarily be expected to remain in your first Detective posting within the Constabulary for a minimum of two years however this would not preclude you applying for promotion should you wish in this timeframe.

Rent/housing allowance:

For those officers who currently receive housing or rent allowance in their existing force, our force equivalent allowance to our maximum will be paid.

Salary and leave

Officers in this Force are paid in accordance with the national rates. Salaries are paid directly into officer's bank or building society account on the 28th of each month.

Leave already booked by a successful officer will be honoured for this year, but officers must advise us of these dates in writing when invited to attend the assessment centre.
