Position Available: Crime Scene Investigator

Salary: £40,009 – £52,467 per annum (dependent on experience)

Contract: Full time, permanent (based on island, relocation package available – enquire on application)

Red Snapper Recruitment are working with The States of Guernsey to recruit a qualified and experienced Crime Scene Investigator to join the Law Enforcement team.

About the Role:

The post-holder will be required to work and train as a member of the Scenes of Crime Team within Bailiwick Law Enforcement (BLE). The primary function is to attend and examine scenes using specialist, approved techniques to visualise, capture and recover evidence and gather information and intelligence as part of an investigation. This includes securing DNA and fragile trace evidence exhibit, photographic exhibits and analysis, comparison and evaluation of fingerprints against computerised and manual reference samples to identify individuals and act as an expert witness in Crime Scene Investigation when required.

Due to the business needs across BLE, the role significantly differs to those within the UK, requiring individuals to operate at a higher level and incorporating a range of administrative duties in support of the organisation’s forensic capability. Off-island travel may also be required for CPD and operational requirements.

In addition to working as part of a small team, there will be the need to undertake lone working and to work flexibly including weekends and Bank Holidays. The post holder will also be required to participate in an out of hours ‘on call’ rota.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Crime Scene Investigator for volume & serious crimes, identifying fragile trace evidence. Record, recover and package exhibits in accordance with force policy. Then undertake the role of Crime Scene Manager/Co-ordinator as required for major incidents.
  • Plan and take a range of evidential photographs to meet the needs of the customer. Store the images then process & package images as per force policy.
  • To undertake latent fingerprint examinations at scenes, on drugs and other exhibits.
  • To be the single point of contact for the submission of drugs to the States Analyst and give expert evidence of cannabis testing and weights, provide examination for guilty plea cases together with advice on storage, delivery and destruction of BLE seized drugs.
  • To attend scenes of sudden unexplained death, Post mortem examinations, recording the scene and recovering forensic evidence to assist the investigation and identification of the deceased via, Fingerprints, DNA or dental records and assist in body recovery.
  • To be licensed to UN3373 to package and send biological substances.
  • To brief / work with specialist teams to ensure the highest possible forensic standards are maintained e.g.: Search, Civil Protection.
  • To lead in criminal fire investigation, working in partnership with Guernsey Fire Brigade and third-party loss adjusters.
  • To deal and advise on white powder incidents and scenes involving chemical laboratories.
  • To be trained to provide post incident forensic support to AFO’s and the Senior Investigating Officer after any firearms incident including police shootings.
  • To develop and deliver forensic training sessions to all levels of personnel within BLE and to external agencies, e.g., Civil Protection volunteers, Prison, Airport.
  • To provide specialist forensic strategies, complete relevant documentation affecting crime investigation strategies, interpret, advice and provide opinion and support on all levels of forensic investigation within BLE and external agencies, e.g., Law Officers, H&SE, Fire Service.
  • To assist with the annual budget submission for forensic services, including monitoring consumables used operationally, including those required by the Force Medical Examiner.

Requirements:

Essential

  • Qualified Crime Scene Investigator with relevant experience.

Desired

  • Previous Law Enforcement experience
  • Valid Driving Licence
  • Level’s 1 & 2 CSI
  • Scene of Crime Development Course (post 2 years)
  • Fire Investigation

  • Elements of the work of this post are unpleasant and the post holder should be resilient, sufficiently mature in outlook and emotionally robust to maintain their own wellbeing when working with sensitive and distressing material.
  • Requirement to complete and maintain role relevant vaccinations provided by Guernsey States or Health care professional (costs reimbursed).
