Legal Careers

The police and criminal justice sector employs over 4,000 in house lawyers, a little over half are employed by the Crown Prosecution Service as Crown Prosecutors and legal trainees.

Crown Prosecutors

Representing the CPS at court and prosecuting cases. Advising police on law charges and procedure. Dealing with pre-charge and pre-process request for advice, making case work decisions and providing advice and instructions of the progressing of case work.

Legal Trainees

The CPS offers training contracts for law students who have completed their Legal Practice Course. The training contract is normally for 24 months and part of this time will be spent in private practice to give the student a broad view of legal practice. On successful completion you be able to apply for Crown Prosecutor posts.

Caseworker

Providing para-legal support to the CPS lawyers assisting in case management and initial case preparation. Liaising with witnesses and their families, dealing with the calculation of professional fees in respect of cases and attending court with the legal teams.

Police/Customs in house legal services

Each police & criminal justice sector employer has it own legal team providing an array of legal services. The services focus on both criminal and civil law dealing with matters as wide ranging as civil claims for death in custody or false imprisonment; the disciplining of officers; offering guidance on public order and policing at events; public enquiries and giving legal advice to counter terrorism experts.
