A new youth commissioner has been appointed by Kent’s PCC in the wake of the high-profile resignation of the first candidate over her social media activity.

Paris Brown sensationally quit the youth commissioner role offered to her by PCC Ann Barnes (pictured) following a media storm over offensive Twitter posts on her account last April.

An independent review commissioned by Mrs Barnes found that the recruitment model was a “robust, transparent and well designed and run process”. However, the commissioner, a former magistrate who is independent of any political party, said that she has now introduced vetting procedures to social networking profiles.

Newly appointed youth commissioner Kerry Boyd (19) passed a selection process and has already started in her new role.

In an interview with PoliceOracle.com Mrs Barnes said that she never underestimated the importance of social media and looked forward to working with Ms Boyd in her important role.

She added: “The only thing I have learned is to look at social media accounts and I have changed my processes.

“I have always known the power of Twitter. Sometimes things don’t work out but this is a good chance to build bridges and we are moving on.

“This is a really important role. I want a link between police and young people.

“Kerry really stood out for me as a strong minded young lady who has a hunger to make a difference.”
