Portsmouth's new Centre of Forensic Interviewing
University of Portsmouth's new Centre of Forensic Interviewing up and running
Opened in December, the University of Portsmouth's new Centre of Forensic Interviewing brings cutting-edge knowledge and facilities together for use by students, researchers and the police.
Based within the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies (ICJS), the Centre provides teaching to students of criminology-related subjects in conjunction with research opportunities for those wishing to examine any topic within the field of interviewing and investigation, alongside training and knowledge transfer initiatives for professionals working in investigative interviewing.
The Centre was opened by Professor Emeritus John Grieve, with representatives of ICJS and several police forces in attendance. With state-of-the-art equipment of Home Office standard, students and professionals alike can now conduct forensic interviews, record and review the evidence given, and - where appropriate - teach with this material from anywhere in the University.
Dr Becky Milne, a chartered forensic psychologist and leader of the Centre of Forensic Interviewing, says: “The police interview is at the heart of every criminal investigation and doing it well is a critical tool for all those involved in the criminal justice process. We’re ahead of the game in terms of the equipment and facilities which rival the best in the world and which we can offer to all types of investigator at different stages of their career, from learning the basics to advanced interview skills.
“And it’s an exciting opportunity to conduct new research in the field which will in turn help to inform the training we provide to students and interview practitioners.”
ICJS has been providing university degrees to criminal justice practitioners for almost 20 years. There is a growing portfolio of courses to choose from which can be studied whilst in full-time employment, from home and at a pace to suit you. The diversity and geographic spread of our students is harnessed within a 'virtual learning environment', linking you to modern learning resources, tutor support and other students and staff in the Institute. We encourage students to join us if they can, on two occasions throughout the year: at the beginning of each academic year in September for a two day welcome event and in late January for our Study School.
